A number of valuable experiences, lessons, and milestones later, Zoran crowns his long-lasting career by becoming the Principal DevOps Engineer at Symphony, streamlining all his efforts into introducing positive changes, driving impact by deepening the knowledge on the DevOps role, while further building a strong DevOps community in Belgrade through a number of activities and initiatives. 

Since the founding of Symphony, we have exponentially grown and implemented ways to better understand the market, our people, and our clients. In this process, our Vision and Mission have changed, but the general sentiment remains the same: to align the impact we strive to make with the means to achieve it.

With engineering hubs in Sarajevo, Belgrade, Novi Sad, Skopje, and Niš, Symphony has finally come to the point of building its first Remote hub. We are doing this to further explore remote work in detail and benefit from the talent across the world.

Imagine a scenario. You are working on a new complex feature. Your team releases to production every two weeks, but to complete the feature, you need more than that. You can always create a feature branch and postpone merging to the main branch until everything is done, but this brings some risks. There is another approach you can use: a technique called feature flags.

Considering how adapting to change is our guiding principle, we aim to quickly respond, invest all the necessary resources, and provide the much-needed reassurance and guidelines to our employees. Sometimes, that can be a tough feat, but we always manage to push through by reassessing our growth opportunities while taking care of Symphony’s core - people.

In this article, we will put together some of the basic spatial data types and operations while leveraging PostGIS to build something that resembles a real-world application that can be useful for our daily lives. The focus will be on the database layer of the application, as that’s where most of the GIS magic happens, but we will ultimately build a full-stack application featuring PostGIS database, Java Spring Boot back-end, and HTML/JavaScript front-end.
